Helpful Tips On Fictional Narrative Essay Writing

In a fictional narrative essay, you should tell an invented story. This is the point where you are likely to get stuck because there is nothing to rely upon. You cannot refer to your past and talk about any of the memorable events that stay in mind in vivid detail. You should base your paper on something that didn’t actually happen. Test your imagination and use the following helpful recommendations to cope with the task well.

What to Include in Your Fictional Narrative Essay

As with any other fictional narrative, your paper should consist of the following major components: characters, setting, dialogue, plot, and the point of view.

  • Decide on the characters for your story.
  • The main character can be either a protagonist (a positive hero) or an antagonist (a villain). Minor characters are those that appear in the story as well and help understand the situation.

  • Use dialogues.
  • Dialogues are useful tools that help develop the story, introduce characters, and expose their traits.

  • Provide a setting.
  • The setting will help you show your story and create the necessary mood. Namely, remember to describe the place, time, surroundings, and even weather in your fictional narrative essay.

  • Base your plot on a conflicting situation.
  • The plot of your paper should be based on a problem that is successfully solved in the end. Therefore, make sure that your story consists of a conflict, climax, and denouement.

  • Include your point of view.
  • You can do it either through the narrator or through the main character of the story.

Additional Tips on Fictional Narrative Writing

  • Catch your reader’s attention in the very first sentence.
  • For example, you can set up the conflict from the start, describe the setting, or introduce the topic with a dialogue.

  • Use appropriate transitions.
  • The situation in your essay will change in time and may occur in different places. Consider this in your paper and use corresponding transitions to demonstrate these changes and make your story flow.

  • End properly.
  • Make sure that the conflict is over in the end. Did the main character learn a lesson? Share it with your reader.

  • Get rid of excess words.
  • Read your paper carefully. Are there any words that add almost nothing to the meaning you wanted to convey? If you can delete such extra words without losing the main idea of the sentence, leave them out. Unnecessary repetitions should be thrown away as well.

  • Write in one tense.
  • Check that you aren’t switching between tenses and make the corresponding corrections. You should be consistent in your paper and use only one tense when telling the story.
